Last year, Abby and I took to the computer for a frank, serious discussion about the holidays and diabetes. But then it digressed into a chat about how friends and relatives handle diabetes, what are our favorite holiday desserts, and the influx of fun-free pie (no recipe, but there is one for the pumpkin roll, which is mentioned several times throughout).
What recipes are your favorite for holidays indulgences? And do you put ketchup on your mashed potatoes?
Okay, I’ll jump in. My favorite, which I haven’t had for a couple of years, is secret kiss cookies. Basically, cookie dough wrapped around a Hershey’s kiss. I add orange extract to the dough for a fun twist. Bite-sized little bolus-worthy goodies.
I like butter, salt, & pepper on my mashed potatoes. Ketchup would probably be healthier, but I just can’t do it.
I don’t really make treats anymore but I will liberate a treat on Thanksgiving or Christmas. The one thing I have done is to devise an evil scheme to enjoy my favorite coffee drinks with no guilt for the holidays.
I ordered sugar-free Egg Nog and Pumpkin Pie coffee syrups. I can now have Egg Nog and Pumpkin lattes that only have a gram or two of carbs by using those flavorings with almond milk (and espresso, of course). One bottle of Egg Nog wasn’t enough so I sent away for the flavoring and make my own syrup now for MUCH cheaper.
According to my kids you are supposed to put ketchup (tomato sauce in the land of Oz) on everything!
Loved listening to what to eat on holidays. Just loved it. I guess I would like to eat a pie – an Aussie Pie – carbohydrate loaded. Also pathetically I love Big Mac’s and French Fries – and I love Fish and Chips. Until I studied in the US I never even considered putting tomato sauce (ketchup) on chips or french fries – we would put it on pies though – meat pies – like “a pie and sauce please”.
A question – tell me again what is fudge? I should know having lived in Chicago for 5 years but I have forgotten …
Have a wonderful happy Christmas and New Year.

ps still struggling with twitter … am I dumb or what?
I don’t eat ketchup on anything, not even hamburgers or hotdogs, and the thought of putting it on mashed potatoes sounds absolutely horrid!
