During my visit to Clara Barton Camp yesterday, I heard the same sentiment over and over again from the kids wearing the bionic pancreas:  “It works.” “It was weird not to touch the buttons when it beeped,” Addy said, an 11 year old camper at Clara Barton Camp who has been living with type 1 diabetes since she was two. …

Giveaway: iHealth Meter (but not a bird).

Blood Sugars, Diabetes Products By July 29, 2014 Tags: , , , , 184 Comments

A few weeks ago, a couple of iHealth glucometers showed up in the mail, courtesy of the marketing team at iHealth Labs.  I have not tried this meter out yet, and I have no clue how it performs against my current glucose meter … but I’m curious.  It’s a teeny little meter and it plugs into the headphone jack on…

Looking Back: Crabs are Evil.

Blood Sugars, Diet and Food, Real Life Diabetes By July 25, 2014 Tags: , , , , , 3 Comments

I’ve always struggled with the right amount of carbs for my day-to-day diabetes management (that sounds so formal, as if I plot this stuff on a spreadsheet, which I do not) and overall, my blood sugar roller coaster is less intense when my carbs are minimal (or deeply imbedded into exercise).  Today, I’m looking back at a post from 2010…

The Friday Six By July 24, 2014 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , 5 Comments

SUM stuff from around the Internet: “The latest in this trend is the meme showing a fat little girl titled ‘Lil Diabeetus snacks’ as a take-off to Little Debbie Snacks.  It’s being bandied about on FaceBook as ‘cute’ and ‘funny’; an appropriate name change.  Is it funny?  I don’t think so.”  Kate weighs in on the Facebook meme. Tuesday’s #dblogcheck…

How Often Should I Change My Lancet? (A “Grost.)

Blood Sugars, Diabetes Products, Real Life Diabetes By July 23, 2014 Tags: , , , , 38 Comments

(Taking a cue from Glu today because when this post rolled through my feed, I was like, “Hmmm.  A lot now, but before?  NEVER!!”) Every single time there’s a new meme about changing the lancet in a finger pricker device (nope, that is not the technical term), I laugh because they are all true in that “whoops” sort of way….

The last thing I wanted to do was take my cover-up off. Chris and Birdy (and our friends and their daughter) were at a water park in New Hampshire where kids can run and play in safe-for-littles sprinklers, pools, and water slides, and as the adults, we were tasked with guarding the perimeter.  Pacing back and forth, the four of…

Have you heard?  Sierra Sandison just earned the crown as Miss Idaho, and she accomplished her goal with an insulin pump clipped to her hip.  Yes, that’s right – another Miss America contender has hit the stage with diabetes front-and-center.  And since winning Miss Idaho barely a week ago, Sierra has already brought type 1 diabetes to the national stage…

Tallygear Winners!

The Tallygear giveaway was fun to run because it helped contribute to a discussion about how people in the diabetes online community are tackling diabetes-related stigma.  The comments section had some great points about erasing diabetes stigma, and I wanted to highlight a few: “Today I had a good discussion with my sister about the different challenges I face (35…
