Attack of the Cupcakes.
New York City was the site of this week's NBR awards, so Chris and I made sure we went into the city early enough to do some really important things. Really, really important things that can change the course of humanity.
I'm talking about cupcakes, of course.
I don't know what it is about cupcakes that brings me such joy, but I am their target market. I love the super sweet frosting, the spongy cake, and the portion sizes (much easier to get a small cupcake versus a small ... pie). I enjoy every kind of cupcake, from the ghetto Stop & Shop ones to the specialty ones that cost a ridiculous four dollar price tag. Like the ones at Crumbs. They are my favorites. (But four bucks? For a cupcake? Ridiculous, yet, I still pay it now and eat it and like it.)
While we were in New York, we visited Crumbs. Land of massive, 500 calorie cupcakes. To prepare for battle, I dosed well in advance of our cupcake excursion (remember, I was on Levemir and Humalog pens for that trip) and started out at a blood sugar of 95 mg/dl.

I had the Raspberry Swirl cupcake (not a big chocolate fan):

and Chris had the White Hot Chocolate one:

And thankfully, the diabetes gods played nicely for the afternoon, landing me at 143 mg/dl about an hour and a half after indulging.

If nothing else, the streets of New York City provide just the right amount of walking exercise to tame even the most frosted of beasts. ;)

NYC is the best place for both food AND walking to burn off said food. Glad everything worked out and you were able to truly enjoy that cupcake

How many carbs did you bolus for may I ask?

I am insanely jealous. Pregnancy hormones are making me crave sweets & pastries fortnightly! :)

It's strange that Crumbs usually doesn't spike my bg either. And bad as that makes me feel the urge to eat them even more :p I actually stopped there last night on my way home from work and tried the blackbottom cheesecake. I'm not a huge chocolate fan either but this was delish! I got hubby the white hot chocolate too and hope I can steal a nibble when he eats it :)

I actually find that Crumbs cupcakes are really easy to bolus for. I think it's because they're SO sugary and sweet that just a basic upfront bolus takes care of things and you don't have to worry about a fat spike or anything strange like that.

That sounds delicious! I want to make an "eat my way across Manhattan" trip this year. Now I just need to find a good crêperie....

YUM!!! I have been craving sweets so bad since I've been pregnant, especially CHOCOLATE!!! I hate always having those cravings. Those cupcakes look amazing! :)

Nice to know! Work near Crumbs and have indulged but never brought one home as cupcakes spike big time. I will bring one home for my kiddo and hope she has the same results. Will weigh it and use carb factors. If results are good, she will be able to indulge and they are truly yummy.

If you like Crumbs you have to try Sugar Sweet Sunshine cupcakes the next time you're in NYC. They're incredible. And try Baked by Melissa, too. They serve tiny cupcakes (really, bite-sized) so you can have five or six and not feel bad!

Jealous! Cupcakes are one of my weaknesses too. I've been dying to try that place, but never make it to the east coast. :( One day, one day.

Those look great...but I'm kinda a pie girl myself. Give me a piece of blueberry pie and I'll be in heaven. I've not got the bolus down right yet so I'm in Sky High Glucose Heaven at the same time!

Hey Kerri - love the new pic! And congrats to Chris!

Hi Kerri, it's a blessing for me to find your blog. I'm type two diabetic for past 1 year and now me and my husband are wanting to have a baby.I could relate to your first post under pregnancy and instantly had tears.I'm going through a similar stage where i'm suppose to bring my numbers under to get a green signal...just seems so difficult.

I've been baking biscotti lately and amazingly while there's 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of sugar in 24 biscotti, it doesn't seem to raise me that much. Then again, the streets of New york are my every treadmill ;-)
