Six Things on a Friday.
1. It's official: I'm being stalked by Madonna's "Lucky Star." Chris taunted me last weekend by waking me up with a falsetto, early-morning "You must be my lucky star!" This was accompanied by several dance moves and some grins. And ever since, I've heard this song as the first radio song my alarm blasts out, playing as I shopped at CVS, trilling to me on my commute home, and lastly, some girl was humming it as she worked out at the gym last night. This tune is chasing me, and it is relentless.
2. After much thought about whether or not to disconnect the pump for my rafting trip, I've decided to disconnect. I won't be able to enjoy myself if I'm constantly paranoid about losing the damn thing. So, in choosing between Lantus and NPH, I'm hearing lots of votes for NPH because it will be out of my system in a more predictable 8 - -10 hours vs. the 24 hour basal rate of Lantus. Am I right on that? I'm calling for scripts from my doctor on Monday and I need my Blogosphere Medical Team to help me make the right decision. Sure, doctors have all those initials after their name, but if
they're not actually doing this, I'm not actually believing everything they say.
3. Thanks to F.R. Kristen, I've been shown the virtual way to Someecards. I have sent them to dozens of people. They are tacky, classless, and their humor is so dry it's dying of dehydration. I love them. Go look. I can't stop.
4. Tu Diabetes. I know you've joined. I've joined. I don't even have to mention it, do I?
5. Admittedly, in hot anticipation of the July 21st final Harry Potter book on the horizon, I've recently plowed through the last book. Preparing. I felt like such a ten year old kid on Thursday night, holed up in my bed with the lamp on and reading The Half-Blood Prince. But now I'm done. And it's such a long, long time until July 21st. Am I the only blogger who has been sucked into the Harry Potter vortex?
6. And HUGE congratulations to Kelsey! And to Art-Sweet and Pili. And Flmgodog. And belated congrats to Lyrecha. (And to anyone I may have missed.) There are so many new additions (and coming attractions) to the d-Blogosphere that it's making my head spin.
Have a good weekend! I'm off to RI.

NPH?? Seriously? Just based on what I have read about you and your reaction to lows, I really don't think NPH is a good option for you.
You will be out in the middle of nowhere on a raft in rough water and gaining access to a quick source of carbohydrate may not be as easy as you think. When you describe your lows, you always mention that you are in the 50s already when you test, so treatment time will be at a premium for you. And time is something NPH doesn't allow. It's unpredictable peak (especially when you are doing something as rigorous as rafting) could be very dangerous. And by the way, how hard will it be to test in those conditions?
You may run a little high, but in my opinion it's best that you run high and not have to worry about a dangerous low in such unpredictable conditions.
Have fun!

Kerri, you are certainly not
the only blogger in love with Harry Potter! In fact, the new book is the Diabetes Daily Book Club's July/August selection. I think we'll have well over fifty people participating. So stop on by!

I'm in the vortex with you - the Harry Potter vortex. I'm almost afraid to read the last book.
Those cards are horrible - in a sick-pleaseure funny kind of way.
Congrats - Kelsey!!! Congrats P and AS!!! And congrats again L!!!

I was wondering if I'll get in trouble for viewing those cards at work, but then I thought, do I really care that much?
(thank you for being one of the Greggie's friends over at Tu.)

Have fun and go with the Lantus. I use my Lantus that I know longer use on my type 1 cat Smokey. Works Great!! Remember you are just using the Lantus as your base line insulin you are still going to be bolusing with the pen. As long as you don't take to much you will be fine.

Thanks Kerri!
I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books, or seen any of the movies! This may be something I need to look into with children in my immediate future :)

I still think Lantus or Levemir would be better than NPH. Do two injections if you think it won't last 24 hours. It doesn't have that huge crash that NPH has - that would worry me more in the situation you're going to be in than the running a bit high might.
I've had the HP book pre-ordered since the day they announced the sale date. So, yeah. Right there in the vortex. I just re-read 3, 4, 5 and 6 in preparation. I may re-read HBP once more, just to get myself psyched up. Like I need to be any more psyched.... :D
The movie comes out in July, too. It's going to be Harry overload and I'm just FINE with that.

Yeah, I'm deep in the vortex. I actually plan on reading through the first 6 books again (ok, many agains for some of them) just to make sure I have the whole story line down.
No, don't go with NPH. Bad. Idea. The suspensions act weird, especially with exercise, from what I have heard. If you want something that is out of your system faster than Lantus, Levemir is your friend. I keep Levemir around in case of pump failures (I'm allergic to Lantus) and it lasts about 14 hours for me. I get it in the pens, so if I have to use it, I don't have to open (and waste) a full bottle, only 300 units. Further, Levemir is good once opened for 45 days instead of Lantus's 28 from what my CDE told me.

We (my ever loving and I) are completely hooked on Harry Potter. We read book 6 together while on vacation, until late in the night. I've got book 7 on order with Amazon - express delivery and cheap prices you have to love it.
I can't wait to get my hands on it. At the same time, I don't want to finish it in a hurry. Because what then?

Yeah for Harry Potter! I am going to reread all of mine before I go (probably at midnight) to pick up the one I pre-ordered! :D
Be careful if you go with Lantus when you go back to the pump. It ends up staying in your system for a couple of days after. When I first went on the pump I think it was day 3 or 4 before my bloodsugars leveled back out & I was able to have an accurate look at what my basal rates & boluses should be.
Yeah to Tudiabetes! It's fun!
Hope you have a great weekend.

It was only after I went on the pump 3 years ago, that my doctor decided to tell me this gem "Did you know that NPH only has a 55% absorption rate?"
Me: "Uh, no. Why didn't you tell me that years ago when you first presribed it to me!?"
Him: "Well there was no alternative at the time."
Note to self: Never, and I mean, never go back to NPH. For any reason.
I had serious Dawn Phenom as well and I never knew what my morning bs was going to be ~ apparently because NPH only worked some of the time.

Is Chris embarassed that you posted in public that he danced around singing "You Must Be My Lucky Star"?
What a sight that must've been, LOL.

I'm not a blogger, but I love, love, love the HP books! My daughter has had the countdown clocks to both book and movie on the desktop for months now; before she left for camp last week she literally danced around because it was getting so close. I'm going to try to re-read them all again before the last one comes out. I'll be up all night reading it, I'm sure - even though it's my daughter's book. She *allows* me to read them first. :)
Have a great time on your rafting trip, whichever insulin you decide to use.

While I can't be considered a blogger, I'm most definitely addicted to HP. I've had the last book preordered since the first day Amazon had it up. I even check out mugglenet.com during lunch on occasion to read some of their editorials and theories.
Also, about 6 years ago, the Santata/Rob Thomas song "Smooth" was stalking me. And I don't even mean right when it came out... it may have started then but it continued far beyond its 92-pro-fm lifecycle.

I've had type 1 since 92 and am currently working as a dietitian, on my way to becoming a CDE. I would recommend using Lantus, since it doesn't have a peak like NPH. The duration is 24hrs, so to figure out your dose you could add up your basal rates for 24hrs, then maybe decrease that by 5-10%, since you'll be more active. Good luck with it all and thanks for writing about your experiences!
