Six Thoughts on a Wednesday

Kerri, Courtney, and Darrell1.  My sister was up from Virginia this past weekend, for the first time in almost a year.  She’s a good kid and we love her dearly.  Now she’s gone and I miss her goofiness.  Here’s a picture of my brother, my sister, and I on the back porch of my mother’s house.

2.  Pouring through diabetic recipe books for a project at work, I’ve noticed how hard the writers try to make a casserole sound scintillating.  I’ve also noticed that if the ingredients list contains more than five items, I can’t focus.  I’m not much of a cook.  My boyfriend and I live off a steady diet of about five dishes, three of which include chicken and one of which includes a phone call to my mother with me saying, “Ma, what exactly am I supposed to do with the pan??”

3.  My car is nothing but trouble and I am aiming to toss it in the spring.  BNot a VW.urns oil like a champ.  I think I may actually be ready to let go of my obsession with VW Jettas.  (Someone needs to talk me out of this.  Seriously.)  Any suggestions on a nice, reliable car that’s kind of cool and on the smaller side?  I’m thinking about the Acura RSX (I had one when I worked for Acura, many moons ago, and it was a hot little ride that went exceedingly fast), but that might not be the best choice for my lead-footed self.

4.  I just finished “Magic for Beginners” by Kelly Link.  It was loaned out to me by Chris’ sister (I definitely took the book jacket off while I was reading it, for fear of wrinkling it up) and it was a Magic for Beginnersbizarre collection of short stories.  Some I found to be very interesting – the kid who inherits a phone booth in Las Vegas was tremendous - but there were a few that came across as abstract art-ish.  I could pretend I understood them, like that Seinfeld episode where no one understands the New Yorker cartoon, but that would mean I’d have to lie.

5.  Looking very much forward to meeting another fellow blogger next week.  They are one of my personal favorites, so it’s a bit of an honor.  It’s so odd to think that I’m meeting someone I don’t know, yet I know.  The gray areas of blogging are vast in that there are people who know the intimate details of certain areas of my life, and I have no idea who they are.  Same goes for me, poking around on blogs and thinking I know these people when, in fact, if they passed me on the street, I would have no idea who they are.

6.  Diabetes has been quiet and behaving itself lately.  No tricky lows, no sticky highs.  Bit of a red spot left from my last infusion set, but aside from that, nothing of note.  I’m going to ride this little moderate wave for as long as I can.  Feels nice.  That, and I put on a pair of pants from last fall that were slightly snug and now they are too big.  It makes those daily treks to the gym worth it, even those days when I have to dra-aag myself there and force my way through a workout.

But he whispers in my ear sometimes, while I’m working out.  You are doing a good job.  Keep at it, Kerri.”

And I turn to him and say, “Thank you, Larry.”

I'm a big fan of Hondas--had a nice Civic and now own an Accord. Sporty. Few problems. Like 'em.

Nice work on the gym visits, the readings, and so on.

1. The three of you sort of look alike, but you all have you're own unique looks.

2. I can pass along some easy, yummy recipes if you'd like to broaden your cooking repetoir.

3. I find my minivan to be reliable and fast!! I leave drivers in my dust on a daily basis...but since you have no kids, I'd opt for anything Toyota or Dodge.

4. Oh, I thought this book was instructional and you were starting up a new hobby, LOL. I'll have to check it out.

5. Befriending bloggers IS such a gray area. When I tell someone about something I read on a blog, I say "A friend of mine, blah, blah, blah....." and then proceed to tell them what I read as though the blogger told me face to face.

6. Yay for exercise!! And yay for diabetes behaving itself!! And yay for loose pants!!

Lyrehca - I've definitely thought about Honda. That little civic, hybrid or otherwise, is a sweet little ride. I'm definitely considering.

Shannon- All three of us look alike, but not completely. We all have very blue eyes, though. There's the link. :)

And yes, I would love some easy recipes! Chris thanks you in advance.

Befriending bloggers is such a bizarre thing. I also have had conversations where I reference someone from a blog, only most of my friends read my blog so they know who you guys are. It's a strange thing. I marvel at it almost daily.

Glad it's the case, though. :)

1. Family pictures!

2. I know they aren't as big east of the Mississippi as they are west, but take a look at the Subaru WRX. Or any Subaru.

3. Most of the people I know are friends from the 'net. Sad, but true. Plus the 'net keeps me connected with my college friends.

1. Sisters rock! I have four, but I only grew up with two.
2. Why do diabetic recipes always include stuff like splenda? ick. One great trick to make really good rice is use chicken or vegetable stock instead of water. Its really easy and adds a lot of flavor. There's a super easy recipe for you!
3. I have a subaru legacy. I seriously DEPEND on my car and I can NOT afford it to break down. This subaru has been fabulous! Starts every single time, and doesn't stop before you get where you are going, unless of course you hit the brakes.
5. Fellow blogger? Have fun, you are blessed to expand your horizons and friendships in such a way!
6. yay! for quiet diabetes!

Ive enjoyed reading your blog. Im new to your blog, but you pulled me right in!

1. Ditto on the sisters rocking.

3. Joseph's favorite vehicle-- the Honda Element. He calls it "a sweet ride." (Yes, yes, he stole that line from Napoleon.)

5. If you're wanting to expand your horizons/friendships ever further, drop me a line-- next month, I'm making a short trip to MA for a surprise party for my favorite sister-- and (if at all possible) would love to arrange a side trip to RI on the 15th :-)

6. Shhhh... just enjoy.

GET A BATMOBLE!!!!!!!

yeah...a batmoble...

I like the batmobile idea, but I have to recommend a horse. It's in my contract.

Rachel - Suburus are pretty big out here. Definitely worth looking in to.

Sarah - Hi there! Welcome to the blog and thanks for reading. And great tip on the rice ... maybe now I will be on my way to an Almost Chef.

Sandra - Hondas are "sweet rides." (I love Napoleon. And Joseph, for loving Napoleon.) I will definitely be back in RI for the weekend of the 15th, as it's the weekend of my JDRF walk. Email en route. :)

Batman - BatmobIle. I was going to change the spelling for you but that would be like changing YOU. Love you like you are, Berman-isms and all. It stays. Just like the strangler on my plate. :)

Kieran - A horse. Drat. I should have thought of that. Far more reliable.

If Sandra is coming to RI and there is going to be some sort of meeting - I would REALLY like to be included! (hint hint)

N

1. Awww. You guys are cuuuute.

2. Foodtv.com is your friend. Check out some of Rachael Ray's stuff and stay away from Emeril. Great recipes, but very long and complicated. My favourite recipe trick is to print it off and then tape it to the inside of the cabinet, so it's always handy. I love to cook, so I'm always looking for new recipes.

3. Hondas are pretty indestructable. Unless you're me - I am a Certified Car Killer.

5. I used to freak about meeting my internet weirdo friends, but now, they make up the bulk of my social circle.

6. Another yay for quiet diabetes!

I have a Mitsubishi Galant SE (sports edition). You should check them out. I am always turning heads. I've had it for a year. My family had Mitsubishi Galant in the family for about 8 years. Maura

I will be in New England that weekend (for ALUMNI WEEKEND you Barton Girls). I would LOVE to hook up with you guys. I will totally invite myself if that's an option!

Man, I am totally living in the wrong time zone! Hopefully there will still be people interested in visiting me when I come to the area in March... Sigh.

I am totally picturing a big annual nationwide OC Bloggers conference somewhere, sometime. I would just love it.

And you are right - it is kind of weird - but you know we all love each other, and have a connection with each other like no other people can have. We are family.

I personally want to meet each and every one of you, and give the guys a firm handshake, and the gals a big hug (not like weird pervy thing - a family type hug), and tell you all, face to face - "thank you". I really can't express how much the OC has meant to me over the past couple of years.

You are all the best.

Oh yeah, and Larry can come to the convention too.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, thought I would do the same. Nice to meet fellow blogaholics.

Looking forward to hearing about the meeting with the blogger. I don't know how I would react if a "blog-friend" wanted to actually meet me. Hmmm...

Great blog. I'm going to add you to my list, if that's ok.

So the RI JDRF Walk is on October 15th and there is a standing (and thrilled-to-have-you) invite for any bloggers to join Team SUM and walk with us. If you want to come for the walk, email me and I'll send you the specifics. And I'll order you a t-shirt, too. :)

Otherwise, I'll be back in RI that Saturday morning and would be more than game to meet up with whoever is in the area. Sandra and Kassie, would you guys be in the RI area that Saturday? Nicole, what are your plans for that weekend?

And as far as an annual blogger meetup, I would totally do that. We had that mini-version last March in Boston. Maybe a repeat this spring in NYC? I'd be willing to investigate arrangements if you guys are interested. Could be fun...

I've met a couple of fellow bloggers(but that was before they started blogging..they were just D friends then!) Cool about your getting to meet another one.
And it would be SO cool to have one big OC get together,I'd try my darndest to come.
Regarding #2-unless Chris Smith(the diabetic chef) is cooking it, I don't do (eat) diabetic dishes.(nor do I fix them) Just fix something healthy, and the diabetes-friendliness of the said recipie will also be assured. I don't cook much either(sorry I can't help you out) but there are alot of good recipie sites out there. Good luck.

Kerri, I'm at Barton until Sunday morning. Potentialy able to bug out early for a post-walk-hookup, but we'll see as we get closer.

Totally ;)

I hope so, Kassie!!

Oh, and Dr. A., would be a pleasure to have you link to me from your site. Thank you kindly. :)

Wow, the whole Morrone clan. Pretty neat - I haven't seen Courtney or Darrell in probably 15 years.

Don't chuck the Jetta. I just got rid of #3, and I miss it. If you're going to get a new car, might I suggest something else from a German manufacturer? They build the best cars, IMHO. And actually, the new Jettas are pretty sweet... =)

Bobby - The whole Morrone clan is still kicking around. Funny how different everyone looks when a DECADE PASSES. (Did we really graduate almost 10 yrs ago? Good lord.)

And the whole thing with the Jetta is breaking my heart. This 2002 I have now is nothing but trouble for me. VW is like an abusive relationship, in that it keeps torturing me but I keep coming back. "No no, it burns off oil because it loves me. It loves me, damnit!" I can't subject myself to another one. I can't.

(... I'll most likely cave and get a new Jetta next spring ... shhh... don't tell.)

I haven't forgotten about the recipes. You'll get a big fat email this weekend :)

Hi, Kerri--Thanks for checking out our blog! Glad you like it. We'll be happy to add your link to our site. Looking forward to reading more...

We own an Acura TSX and I would not recommend an Acura for the following reasons: No running lights, no automatic headlights and lousy, lousy gas mileage. I would buy a Toyota or a Honda. Less money, more car and benes for the money!

Kerri,

Hmmm, another thing we have in common: D, love of the Red Sox, and now Jettas! I have owned Hondas since my first honda in 1978, and in 2006, I switched to the 2006 Jetta, which I really love. I've always enjoyed manual trans, since that's what I learned on in the dark ages, but I'm learning new things, and one of them is to enjoy the cool sport shift in the new Jetta. I haven't had any problems since owning it for a year, except for the trunk, which has become difficult to close, takes several tries; a minor inconvenience that I'll get fixed next week. Overall the Jetta is as well-engineered as the honda, IMHO. You can't go wrong with a Honda, even though they do have their quirks; they've come a long way since that tiny box car I owned in 1978.

Best wishes, I enjoy reading your blog!
